Add conditional logic or formula automation to just one column or clause in the template and make sure it's working before moving on to another. Change just one thing in the template document before uploading the new version and checking that it works. Don't embark on grand plans and massive projects; either you'll never finish, or it will be irrelevant or unwanted by the time you do. With each improvement you finish quickly, your team will save a little more time or get a little more accurate, and that's what it's all about.
